A scalp massage is one of the simplest things you can do for yourself. It takes about two minutes, needs nothing but your fingertips, and turns an everyday step into a small moment of calm. Here's how to do it well.
Before you begin
Wash your hands, and keep your nails short or use the pads of your fingers rather than the tips. If you're using a scalp product, follow the directions on its label for when and how to apply it.
The two-minute massage
1. Part and apply (about 15 seconds). Part your hair in a few places so you can reach the scalp directly. If you use a serum, apply a few drops along each part.
2. Start at the hairline (about 30 seconds). Place your fingertips at your hairline and move them in small, slow circles. Use gentle, steady pressure: enough to move the skin slightly, never enough to hurt.
3. Work toward the crown (about 45 seconds). Move your hands back a little at a time, continuing the same small circles across the top and sides of your head.
4. Finish at the nape (about 30 seconds). End at the back of the neck, where many people hold tension. Slow down here and breathe.
A few tips
- Gentle is enough. Scrubbing, scratching, or pressing hard isn't more effective, and it can irritate the skin.
- Keep it consistent. A short, regular routine is easier to keep than a long one you only do occasionally.
- Make it yours. Some people like doing it at night as a way to wind down; others prefer mornings. Pick the moment you'll actually return to.
When to skip it
If your scalp is irritated, broken, or sore, give it a rest. If irritation from any product continues, stop using it. For ongoing scalp concerns or changes in your hair, a dermatologist is the right person to talk to.
